🔬 Investigating Burning Magnesium

Our Year 8 students explored an exciting chemical reaction in their project “Investigating Burning Magnesium.” This hands-on investigation allowed them to observe how magnesium reacts when heated and to understand the scientific processes behind combustion and oxidation.

During the experiment, students watched the magnesium strip burn with an intense white light, transforming into a white powder called magnesium oxide. They recorded their observations and compared the mass before and after burning, learning that a new substance had formed clear evidence of a chemical reaction.

This project strengthened students’ understanding of chemical reactions, reactants and products, oxidation, and changes in mass, giving them a real world look at how materials transform during combustion.
